Can they make it summer all year around?
Millionaire Alec hasn't dared tell his controlling mother that he's gay. Fleeing his unwanted fiancée for a month on the Cornish coast, he is struck as if by lightning by the sight of surfer Darren. Summer made flesh, freedom wrapped in a lithe and gorgeous body, Darren is everything he wants and can't allow himself to have.
Poverty-stricken Darren takes one month a year away from his life of grinding overwork, his sponging father and drug-addict brother, financing his holiday by picking up the first rich man to show an interest. Last year that tactic almost killed him. The guy turned out to be more danger than he could handle. Alec looks sweet though, and he's almost more scared than Darren is.
Their whole lives are against it. But if only this escape could go on forever…
“Shining in the Sun is a breath of fresh air and you will love the British and French ambience….This book is a terrific entrance into contemporary M/M for a writer whose skill and historical characters I have grown to love.” --Gay Book Reviews

The first half of this tale is the " getting to know you stage" between our unlikely heroes. It's mainly the touchy, feeling type of interaction. Admittedly, it's nice in the sense of giving the reader a taste of newness in a beginning affair. My thoughts wandered to my own first time experiences. Personally, I would not have spent almost half the book on the subject. But hey, it did work and didn't discourage further page turning. Now the premise of a rich guy and poor (hustler) guy getting together and pulling it off took some work. Beecroft did a splendid job
of tying it all together. The last half of the book was an exciting read regarding this" on again" and" off again " relationship. Overcoming class, defeating destructive family ties, developing self assertion and willingness to risk were themes throughout this work. Don't get me wrong. This was a fun read but it had interesting social commentary.
What I especially liked about this piece was the main characters commenting on the absurdity of such a relationship. The author
brought out the self doubts of all of this even being real for our two primary fictional leads. I liked
the protagonists thinking out loud what any reasonable person would think how this could really work.
Just get through the first half( it's not that bad) and I think you won't regret the decision to read this one.

Shining in the Sun A Gay Contemporary Romance edition by Alex Beecroft Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I really liked this story, even with the relationship suffering several on/off cycles. I never felt like the reader was being needlessly jerked around when the two main characters struggled through defining their relationship. The drama contrived with Max seemed a bit over played but I just let it go in favor of the over-all story.
The ending is just too neat. Everyone is happy and content; even the villain turns out to be a good guy. Not so keen on that, since things are never so tidy or spotless in real life. There are happy endings and happy endings; this one was sweet enough to make your teeth hurt.
That said, the writer's power of description is quite remarkable, almost intoxicating. The characters are well presented, the dialogue fluid, the plot firm. If you are fond of romance with a fairy tale ending, I would recommend this book without hesitation.
I am a huge fan of Alex Beecroft's historicals and so it was with anticipation that I was looking forward to her first foray into a contemporary story. I wasn't disappointed. Shining in the Sun has the hallmarks of what I love about Alex's writing lush prose, wonderful detail, and complex characters. I was pulled into the story from the first page and just kept reading. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it. For readers who may have stayed away from Beecroft because "I don't like historicals" (I know there are a few of you out there!) well, here's your chance to be introduced to a terrific writer with a very rich and complete story set in the present time.
Just loved this. Unusual protagonists, both more beta than alpha, both help each other find their courage. Surprisingly sweet book. Alec is the child of privilege with an overbearing mother and a smart fiancé and he desperately needs a month's break to get away from both of them. He thinks he might be gay but has never actually touched another man. Darren is the child of poverty, with his own way of escaping that grinding crush. Together they find each other, touch each other's prejudices and still find love. Beautifully written with great supporting characters, everyone is fully fleshed out and interesting, and even the villains have reasons here. Alex Beecroft usually writes historicals and has a little too much pain in them for me (I love emotional angst but hate real whippings) and here she is just perfect for me. Happy find and will be a frequent reread.
When I heard about Alex Beecroft publishing a contemporary romance I was, well not exactly worried, I trust in her writing talent and as of today will buy anything that she will write, I was I think a little bit surprised. I was wondering why she decided to abandon writing about guys at sea. Well, she did not abandon guys at sea. Sea is very present in this story.
Both of our heroes escape to the sea to have one month out of their busy and stressful lives to be themselves. Millionaire Alex escapes from overnearing mother and fiance and stressful work to his yacht and to be free to look at the handsome guys. Alex knows that he would much rather be with a guy you see, but he had not actually been with the guy yet.
And Darren escapes to surfing, he wants to escape from all the things his poverty makes him to do to take care of himself and members of his family and some of those members should we say not the most grateful people in the world. And this year Darren also runs from the very bad ending of his prior relationship.
And they meet near the sea and here it all begins.
I realize more and more that it is so much easier to explain the things that did not work for you in the book than to explain why SO MUCH did work.
Where do I start? Probably with the fact that I more often than not cannot visualise what I am reading about right away, I need to stop and think about it before I get a visual so to speak. And the writer who makes me seeing their story in front of my eyes right away deserves the praize for this fact alone if for nothing else.
When I was reading this book it was as if I was seeing a movie, Alex in the car, their first meeting, sea and surfers, they are on the yacht, everything right in front of me and it was so much fun.
Visuals were amazing and all because this writer is so skillful.
Or should I talk about how much I loved all the characters and how much I loved that while Alex and Darren were flawed people, their flaws were also very real world flaws? I mean I cannot really relate to one of the protagonists being a killer for example (it is a hypothetical example lol), but I certainly can understand trying to get a money by any means possible if you live in the conditions Darren did and I certainly can understand not being brave enough to tell your family or loved one what you really want and why they should move a bit and give you space to breath while you figure out what is it that you really want.
And how much I love how the changes in the characters are shown and how simple it is why they really belong together - they make each other brave and they are "on the same page" as to what each other wants.
Oh I loved this book so so much.
